This is the story of a man who I would define as a searcher. A searcher is a person who searches, but does not necessarily find anything. Nor it is someone who necessarily knows what he is looking for. It is simply someone who takes life itself as a search.

One day, the searcher felt he had to go to the city of Kammir. He had learned to follow his internal voice, although he didn’t know where that voice came from. He left everything and took off.

After two days walking along dusty roads, he could see, on the horizon, the silhouette of Kammir. Shortly before arriving in the town, he noticed a low hill on the right side of the road. It was covered with a wonderful green lawn and lots of trees, birds and flowers and was surrounded by a small shiny wooden fence. He saw a small gate, and decided to go through it.

He suddenly forgot the town and wanted to rest in this place. As he crossed the gate he walked slowly among white stones that were distributed randomly between the trees.

His eyes were like butterflies alighting on each detail of this amazing and colorful paradise. His searching eyes discovered an inscription carved on a stone.

Abdul Tareg, lived 8 years, 6 months, 2 weeks and 3 daysHe realized that the stone was not just a stone, but a gravestone. He felt sorry for the kid buried in this place and as he looked around, he noticed that there were other stones with inscriptions. He stepped closer and read:

Yamir Kalib, lived 5 years, 8 months and 3 weeks

He felt deeply saddened and moved. This beautiful place happened to be a cemetery and each stone was a grave. One by one, he read the inscriptions. They all were similar: a name, and the exact time the buried person had lived. But what shocked him most, was to notice that the one who had lived the longest, had been just over 11years old.

He felt a terrible pain, sat down and gave vent to his tears.

The guardian of the cemetery was walking by and he approached the crying man. He watched him in silence for a few moments, then he asked him if he was crying for a relative.

“No, no relative”, the searcher replied. “What is wrong in this town? Why are all these children buried here? What is the curse on the people of this town that they had to build a cemetery for children?”

The older man smiled and replied:

“Calm down my friend. There is no curse on this town. We just happen to have a ritual. Let me tell you about it. When a young person has his fifteenth birthday, his parents give him a little notebook, like this one I have here hanging on my chest. Starting that day, it is a tradition among us to open the notebook and note inside it, every time we have an intensely happy experience. We write down on the left what we enjoyed, and on the right, how long the enjoyment lasted. You met your girlfriend and fell in love with her. How long did the intense passion last? How long the happiness of having found her? A week? Two? Three and a half?… Then, the emotion of the first kiss, how long did it last? A minute? Two days? A week? Pregnancy, or the birth of a daughter….? The wedding of a friend? The most anticipated trip? Meeting a brother returning from a distant country? How long did the enjoyment of each of these situations last? Hours? Days?”

And so… we just write down in the little notebook each moment we enjoy…every single moment.

When someone dies, it is our tradition to open his notebook, and add up the time he has enjoyed, and then we write it on his gravestone. Because this is, for us, the only time the person really lived.

Four Years

September 18^th I left Arequipa, Peru for my adventure in Europe, I got elected MCVP in AIESEC Macedonia for the term 2007-2008.

September 19^th I arrived to a beautiful country called Macedonia for an original idea of spending 8 months and then returning home, 4 years later I’m writing from Germany somehow celebrating, my 4^th year in the old continent, my 4^th year away from my family.

Looking backwards they were 4 amazing years that brought me many learning experiences in every aspect of my professional, personal and spiritual life.

I learned to say I LOVE YOU to a very special person who shared 3 years of her life with me but, sadly and painfully, life showed me to say GOOD BYE to her (the hardest thing I did in my life). But again, looking backwards, those were good years, she was the best thing that happened to my life until now, and to her I’ll be eternally grateful.

I discovered that you can never be granted of having everything ensured such like job, money, relationship, health, friends, etc. A good friend passed away in 2010, but leaving me the most inspirational message that I could have ever imagine. Figuratively speaking he gave me a slap in my face for a wakeup call, since then I can really notice I’m different for good.

I learned to deal with my fears and solve every complicated situation face to face. This one was very hard to deal with because I rather avoid things than face them. 2011 was the year where I faced many challenges in the professional and, specially, personal side.

I’m connecting the dots and almost everything makes sense, every decision I made or every situation the destiny drop me let me to something really good; there is only one thing that I still can’t understand and trying to find out the sense of it, I believe this means there is still a string waiting to be connected to that dot, we will see, life is life and my lead performance in the play is still waiting for me.

4 years in Europe, don’t know how many more, I just know there is still time.

Just for closing this post, THANK YOU to all of you who shared your life with me in this past 4 years; It was an almost __________ experience :) (if you know me a bit, you might be able to complete the blank space :P )

Just one year ago...

This post is not related to AIESEC, however I believe is worth to share it.

It is a pretty weird feeling when you meet for first time a person and immediately you became friends. It was during a championship, one of my team mates introduced me to his cousin, who will join to the club, 2 years younger than me, funny face, crazy and kind of stupid… this is how I meet you my friend.

13 years later, even the number is creepy; I read your stupid email with the subject “Cholo, as always I’m the first in everything ;)”… I was traveling and had no much time for emails so I couldn’t read this email almost a week after, when I opened it I saw a large email, so I was surprised because this little bastard never spend time to write, he rather call or explain everything in 2 lines, anyway, because of the subject I thought he is going to get married or maybe he will get married and being a father too, so once again I was thinking on how much I hate this guy who wants to be first in everything I want to do.

I read the email 4 days later and I couldn’t believe what it was written there and even worst I didn’t have the chance to answer it.

No handshake, no one more beer argument, no Starcraft duel… just like that you left first this world.

One year with the black ribbon, our promise once we did is kept, not sure when will be time to get back, but until then it will be in my wrist.

For the email, thank you, it helped me and sure it will keep helping me in the future, and this is what I feel is worth to share, I’m just posting some things in very short statements, many other thing just make sense for him and me:

Be yourself, be yourself and be yourself because at the end you have to stand yourself before standing your wife.
Never let anyone eat alone not even to yourself.
Small details are very important.
If you fucked up, then fix it, is never too late or too impossible. You just need to get rid of your silly proud.
Don’t lie, please don’t, even if you are good at it.
A big hug, a huge kiss or a well done handshake should be never be forgotten, you don’t know if is going to be the last one, and please, do it if you really mean it.
Home is where your heart feels joyful and for obvious reasons where the one you love is happy next to you.

One year ago he left this world, although for me is hard to understand it, for me he is still in my country or traveling around the world.

Take care my friend. Cheers!

And once again... in search of my successor

We AIESECers know that because our term is just one year, we get this ability of learning, building, planning, and performing in really short time, and without noticing is already moment to search for our successor...

I have to admit it, is a feeling of excitement and sadness... picture it in this way, you have spent many months, non sleeping, traveling, fighting, challenging yourself in order to build what you have built to the point of ownership that you see your work as your baby, and for sure, you don't want to leave your work to someone that can not give a good care of it, and when you find the right one, is a feeling of vision, imagination, dream to see where else this person can take the work you have started... (still with sadness, because after all, you have to leave your baby to this new person).

Well, I thought this path had ended for me, but seems is back... I'm close to finish my job, and is time to find the new me :) It is going to be hard, because aside from my MCP term, I also love this job.

So August it is, in two weeks from now I will know HE or SHE whom I'll choose. I just wish to find a better candidate than me... just like I did it before.

And of course, this doesn't come alone, there is still an extra excitement moment in this process... the NEXT STEP... but for that I'm not worry, and you shouldn't, because the next step shouldn't be forced, it will just happen when the right moment and time will come, you will just know... I don't mean to laid at bed a hope for some divine message... I mean, keep searching and looking around, be aware that you are looking for that next step, it will be then when it will just happen... you might don't know it yet, but maybe it is already there, but you can not just see it... don't worry, give it time, is just something you can not push, but trust me... it will happen.

Understanding life...

After a long year of resting of my writings (at least online sharing) finally I'm back writing on my blog...

There are many things I learned in this past year and a half that I was not writing, many things to share, so I will start for few things that matters for me.

Will you be able to change your career to start over in some other field? Will you have the courage to leave a manager position to start something else as a recent graduated? Will you move and leave everything for a relationship or family?

During this year I had the opportunity to interview several candidates for several roles and positions, and the only thing I have to say is if you really listen them, you can not just understand them but even you can learn from them.

I can write you pages and talk to you by hours about only one candidate's point of view about life or about his decisions, but the goal of all that discussion would be, What did we learn about it?

Among those interview I remember one particular moment that I will always keep in my mind; It was a +40 years old individual, sited in front of me, totally harmless, with something in the eyes that was not right, as usual I asked all the questions by the book, but still there was something missing, I could feel it... I didn't mind the interview could last more than 1 hour, I really wanted to know...

After talking for more than 50 minutes, the true came, I didn't need to force him, I just asked the right question in the right way and he opened to me, and we he did I knew this time was not an elaborated answer prepared at home to make himself a good candidate, the true was better than any possible answer and the expression in his eyes where the stamp that confirmed everything.

A good career path, everything planned, some things were good some not, got a manager position, finally the achievement aimed for many years but, as he mentioned me, at the end he noticed he was risking a lot for that and he couldn't cope with it, salary was good, many travels, many responsibilities but also many hours in the office, many hours away from his house (house because it was not a home anymore), thinking that all that sacrifice done for those years will pay back and will finally enjoy with his family.

"Family, well hard to say a family now, I love my wife, but now we are more likely as flatmates" . It was not need to understand more so changed the topic and asked about something else.

He knew what was happening, he knew what he was losing, what he was risking, but he knew it too late, when things were broken and seemed to be no way back; it was then when he saw a slight opportunity, "I want a wife again, and I want a home again".

This interview was one my first interviews last year, I recommended this candidate for the positions, although the chances to elect him were small as per possible "expectations/experience mismatch". At the end we couldn't hire him for the position he was applying... however a month later I saw one position where he can fit a bit better, and I knew I can convince the project manager to take him on boar, and he did.

More than six months have passed, and my dear friend just bought a house because he is going to be a father next year, now he is stress with the moving and the pre baby activities, but as he told me once, "actually this is a good life" and then he said, "Got to go home"

Some people can Balance their work/personal life, some people can not, but you have to be strong enough to admit it and even stronger to take actions to change that.

Really, sometimes life is way easier, we are the ones that make it complicated.

Merry Christmas my friends

I heard once, and once only by a very good friend, whom I respect the most but today is not among us... friends are the best and the worst that can happen to you... because they have the particular capacity to amaze you, hurt you, make you laugh and cry, at the point that they will make you cross the line between love and hate many, but many times.

Those individuals you call friends, are by definition and already took responsibility of what who you once were, the one you are now and who you'll soon become.

As I declared before, once, and no need to repeat it, although repeating makes it distinctive, there is nothing else I need for Christmas but my friends close to me... as for now, my friends, each of you, no exceptions taken, no criteria evaluated, you are on my mind and in my heart and certainly in my life, because, with simple maths, I'm the one who I am, because each of you and for that... THANK YOU!

4. Following my heart: When giving is more than receiving

My best friend studied Business Administration; he got a specialization in Economics; and like him most of my closer friends. During those years in the university I’ve been involved in several conversations about business, profit, investments, etc, jumping from micro to macroeconomics concepts, and even planning our own consulting company. However my mind was in the other side of the coin.

Started volunteering five years ago, and by then of course I was the “black sheep” of my group of friends, having out of the box opinions about working without salary or spending my time, for them, in “useless things”. During those years their opinions did not change and neither mine, in fact I can say those friends gave me the strength to continue and for that I’m very grateful to them.

Why my opinion didn’t change? — Is a question that was present in my friend’s minds. Young students are energetic, looking for a passion to follow, and mostly they want to change the world. And that is what keeps me going. Doing volunteering I found the opportunity to do something I believed, and I still do, that can create an impact which can not only change my life, but also can provide positive change in others. And this is what made the difference.

Years have passed and I found my self in another country, leaving, learning and enjoying in a different culture, far different than mine; but at this point those two year’s investment of my life in Macedonia brought me the best and most exciting experience I had until now. However two years seem to be too short for making bigger changes, there is still too much to do in this country and too much opportunity that are not been used properly, specially now and in the coming years under the context of the EU integration.

Is needed to find young volunteers to continue the work done in Macedonia, and to spread the impact that can be done, for that objective we need to attract and retain the right people into our organizations. From my specific experience in the past years working with university and high school students I can mention the following learning points.

- The presence of the international young specialists brings a whole new dimension to the projects. The teams are formed by young people from different nationalities and allow learning from other countries’ experiences and initiatives around the topic we are interested to approach.

- Providing the opportunity to put the theory into practice brings the motivation to young individuals to prove themselves what they have learned and what is left to learn, which also provides the motivation to continue supporting as volunteers for the future.

- Programs for young people should be also be run and by young people. The involvement of young individuals provides the trust and energy to the project to be executed from the beginning to the end, which is reflected by the learning of the team members and results of the project.

Over everything we have to be aware that volunteers are the most powerful energy that can create meaningful impact in the society. With a clear vision and common understanding of what we want to create, support or change, they will be able to do it. I can openly share this because I started as volunteer in AIESEC and it changed my life bringing me the most beautiful experience I've ever had.

3. Following my heart: Observing, Listening and Learning

— How it feels to be the National President? And two times? — A new executive member from a foreign country asked me with the enthusiasm of someone finding clues of a secret.

— It feels like having a hobby, but more fun — I answered smiling, and it was like that how a long conversation started between both of us, she kept asking me several things, work related, personal related, culture related, university related and we go on until was late and we both felt hungry.

— I want to eat a salad?

— And I want a pizza, I know a place, is called Plaza de Toros… Our “Strategic Food National Partner” — I answered fast, hoping she will catch the small joke.

— Yes, hahaha, you go there often? — We laugh because the restaurant became unofficially our lunch, dinner and coffee break partner, we always went there, it became a tradition, and the employees also knew about us, they already knew all the time what we are going to order, they always come with a big smile offering us a nice table for us, and if is needed to join tables for big groups; for us it was nice to have a place like home.

— Thank you for your time, I know you might be busy especially now that is transition period in the National Committee. But I want to ask you about working things, I’m concern about the challenges we might have the next term and the lack of motivation of the members for support the office.

— That always happens in organization that are working in the same way than pass years, or working in a traditional way. If you want I might give you some advices but I need to know more information. Can you describe me what is happening in your local office? Make a small report.

— Yes, why not. We are preparing for the recruitment period; but the Exchange department is setting goals for the number of students we will send for our term, however the Talent Management department has set already the universities where they will recruit the members, but they have no idea about the profile that exchange department is requiring. At the same time the Communication Department had prepare their Communication Plan for Recruitment, but they haven’t define the target market they have to approach.

— Ok, this is clear and you know it. It is lack of coordination.

— Also I would like that the members had an attitude like mine, working, supporting other activities, focusing in the details, aiming that everything has to be done in a proper way.

— This is lack of commitment. You have to promote the integration of the members; they have to feel that the local committee belongs to them, that everyone feels like a family.

— Another is the office, we need more things but there is no space in the office for everything we want to do. We need more computers, some LCD projector, photocopier, coffee machine and a conference room.

— You are talking about an infrastructure problem. In general some of all the problems you have mentioned might be solved if you ask for recommendations to the members.

— I know, but that really works? It can solve the problems? Because once we made a survey asking for recommendation and only one filled it, and we tried again using an LC Meeting for this, but it didn’t work.

— It works, but is better to talk with them, to have the personal contact; this is how many other organizations are working with their employees, volunteers, etc. It makes the difference.

— I see. But there is more — She mentioned me with concern—. We also have problems with other organizations, they are having stronger promotion, they are recruiting in our university now and they even want to open an office in the same faculty, and even when they are offering things that will never provide, they are taking our members, our partners!

— What you are mentioning now is the competition, and it will continue growing. So you and your members should learn to coexist with it. What you have to do together with your members is to offer what the competition is not offering. So you will have competitive advantage. And actually, according to Michael Porter the three methods for creating a sustainable competitive advantage are through Cost Leadership, Differentiation, and Market Focus.

— Thank you for helping me to see and analyze my local office reality. What do you thing if we rest for today? and let’s have a coffee tomorrow because I have so many other questions.

— Yes, I’m also a little bit tired. Thank you for you attention, it was long afternoon.

At the end of the conversation meanwhile we were walking back to the office, we knew the time spent together was a helpful for both of us. She was catching the learning and the experience that I have, and I felt I was helping her plus I also felt happy about her interest for learning and not to make the same mistakes that the experience teaches.

2. Following my heart: The comfort zone

— Are you Yoel? From Peru?— a tall guy with a Grey jumper approached to me with a funny smile.
— Yes, my name is …. — and without having time to introduce myself this guy hug me like if I were his brother who haven’t seen from long time ago, this funny guy name is Nenad.
I was expecting something completely different, I was told I will live in a really cold environment, with people who barely smile, because now I was heading to the Balkans; but instead I found the opposite side of the coin, they are very warm, hospitable people, somehow I felt still in Latin-America when it was the first time I meet them.
— How are you? How was the trip? What happened with you? … we thought you will not come … — Nenad kept asking me more questions meanwhile he was driving me in his Yugo to the center of Skopje, but me I was just observing the view. I was wondering all the time what is happening in the minds of the people who goes to live in another country with different culture, what is the feeling, I for sure felt weird, nostalgic and happy, afraid and excited, heart broken and in love, everything at the same time, but over everything I felt stronger because one more time I decided to step outside of my safe world or like is known in psychology like the comfort zone.
The comfort zone refers to the set of environments and behaviors with which one individual is comfortable, without creating a sense of risk. In leadership matters is known that highly successful persons may routinely step outside their comfort zones, to accomplish what they wish. A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries. Such boundaries create an unfounded sense of security. Like inertia, a person who has established a comfort zone in a particular axis of his or her life, will tend to stay within that zone without stepping outside of it. To step outside a person's comfort zone, they must experiment with new and different behaviors, and then experience the new and different responses that then occur within their environment.

1. Following my heart: 19th of September

— I love you son, go on and follow your dreams… we will be always with you — where the words of my father in the airport.

— Bro, good trip… now your room will be mine — my small sister told me with a evil smile in the face meanwhile a tear dropped slowly on the left cheek of my older sister who was standing behind her.

Then everyone jumped to make a group hug even when we were joking about other people doing those kinds of scenes in the airport, but this time, somehow we knew that this will be a long good bye and time will pass before to see the family together again. It was almost time, the last call for the boarding passenger was announce and after a last strong hug to everyone I went walking to the passport control prepared for my next journey, full of emotions, but before to stop seeing my family I turned back, and a huge flying kiss was the last thing I did before to cross the police control; a strange feeling went through myself and my teary eyes where covered by the sunglasses before to take the plane, but I was prepared because I knew I will come back.

With 24 years, I had the opportunity to lead the national branch of a global organization in Peru, traveled to several countries for International Conference in America, Europe and Africa, being facilitator at national and international level, lead a high quality team members, and more than 200 students from the best universities in my country; in sum I’ve been able to experience to be like a CEO in a really young age.

When once I was doing volunteer work in an asylum because of university obligations, so many things came into my mind, and somehow so many questions where answered; It was nothing about science, about philosophy, about job opportunity, it was something much more simple, it was about the life it self; I have to be sincere when I’m saying I didn’t think about it until years after when I traveled to Poland for an International Conference and had the chance to travel to one of the places that I was curious to see but at the same time afraid to be there, the concentrations camps of Auschwitz, it was then when something changed in my life.

I was crossing the Atlantic Ocean again, but this time with one way ticket; recalling the last words of my father, those words were in my mind during the long 15 hours of traveling, during those hours I was asking myself why I’m doing what I’m doing, the answer was really simple, I was following my heart, that weird feeling when you are in front of something or someone, and you just know, is illogical, is just there, and you just know, but is right.

It was Wednesday 19^th of September, finally I was there, the land who called me with a magical reason, with almost no purpose, but the feeling was there, the feeling to be in the right place in the right moment. A place who became home, a place where I fall in love, a place where I born again, a beautiful place called Republic of Macedonia.

First steps as MCP, some tips and personal thoughts

This is not 100% certified that works, is only my experience, and I saw it work. ;) if there are more tips, so perfect, just be free to share with us ;)

Is a really good experience to be MCP, I can for sure tell you this, and from my past experience I can share some tips.

The First months... transition... legal status... planning... national conference.... lc visits... IC!!!

if your term looks like that... don't panic... is just starting :) but when you catch the feeling (that special thingy :P) everything will start to work smoothly.

Hey, one more time, special focus on legal status and legal representation of the mcp and the finance responsible...

The rest, transition... no matter how good it is, you will always ask to the past team members... they know... really.... and in the worst case scenario if they weren't good on what they did, at least they will tell you what not to do... the experiences teaches a lot

Planning, is the most simple thing that we use to complicate it a lot.... like for example... have a really nice and beautiful plan, but you will notice that is unrealistic, or even worst, when there is no ownership from the EB/Members... (remember... the members are the ones who will execute the plan, if they don't feel it like their own, nothing amazing will happen in the year)

Of course the work is different depends of the team you have, or the country you have to lead... is completely different to run a 800 members country than a 40 members country, each of one has positive and negative sides... but the trick is to see each reality and used as an opportunity (ie. the country is small, 40 members, few lcs.... so maybe you can have LC visit in every LC in the coming weeks and support them on transition, planning, and trainings... it will give you positive vibrations from the LCs and motivation for your team...

Well, those are some things i wanted to share now... for sure there are a lot of more things that every one of us can share... so lets continue with this...

Next Steps in AIESEC :)

A wonderful thing from AIESEC is the Platform of Oppotunities.... but also sometimes is a nightmare... yes, because you have a lot of opportunites at the same time and you need to choose one, but you don't know wich one, because all of them looks really good, and of course, they are... so... what to do???

Ok, this is my perspective, I will share it because it might help to some AIESECer in the world :) is all about GOALS ;)

I'll focus on some facts.... (i'm focusing in leadership opportunites)

International MC is a wonderfull experience, and will help you to have a different vision of the world, even to develop some skill that you might not notice; also can help you to improve other language and is usually necesary if you want to stand for positions as MCP, GN or AI, but mostly for AI.

National MCVP, is a challenging experience, if you want to see your country in a better way in the future, and also being part of that growth, this is for you, it will help you if you want to stand for MCP in your country or MCVP in other country.

MCP, this is one of the most beautifull experience in AIESEC, because you are the strategic leader and ambassador of your country, you need to be aware that you need to have a clear vision of you country in the coming years, and how to get there... logn term vision is a must, sustainability as well... is also hard but the best experience you can have... the experience is important, but even more is the competencies for the position... and the proud for you country... and if you wanted, go for it, but alwats keep in mind, that everything is for you country and not for you... but importan (and this is a personal thought), if you run for MCP, is because you need to stand later for AI, GN Board, Global Coordinator, or a really nice traineeship... i mean, you invested your time for one more year, so why to stay there, go on and you might discover something that you never saw before.

Now always focus in what is your personal vision, remember that AIESEC is platform for your personal and professional development, also remember that for you AIESEC doesn't last forever.. is a youth organization and some day you will need to became alumni and work in a company, create your own one, or finish your master or phd degree, some day you will need to say to AIESEC "thank you for everything, now i have to continue with my professional life"... always remember how AIESEC will help you to your GOALS.... but also more important, remember how your work in AIESEC will support the organizational goals ;) al the time has to be a WIN - WIN situation between AIESEC and YOU ;)

I can not share all my opinion in this post, but always I'm open to talk, chat, mail, with everyone :P there are some experience that should be shared... and also for both sides... AIESEC is wonderull and I'm very gratefull with my organization.

Lets talk about the AIESEC life now… so far I had the chance to be involved in different teams during my aiesec career, but only once I joined to a team when the team was already consolidated as a team, long time ago, but at that moment the situation was different and I was sharing with friends I knew even before to became aiesecer, so there were no challenge at that point of time… what I mean is that now I’m part of this MC Team, but I’m not part of the Team itself, I don’t know very well my team mates, they don’t know me too, so I can say this is the most difficult part of start as MC member after the team was already formed; I know my team mates are trying hard to take me as their MC family, and I know that I’m also trying hard to became part of the family, but for sure this will take more time, is just like this and we need to do it step by step. I’ll admit this, I miss my lovely Super MC and I want to feel the same with my new team.

The MC life is awesome, I remember that the nicest moments in the MC team where in the National Conferences, because we used to spend days before the conference living together and working together, and those where the moments when I felt we were working as one and working in the most effective way. Now I’m having the chance to do that all days, I live with one of my team mates, the MC office is close to the MC flat, and we work in the office for all day, working together and having fun together all the week; this is a experience I missed since I was LCP, and now I’m living it again. Now, as one my dear ex team mates used to say, what is the learning point of this? well, when I worked in mc peru the reality was different, we couldn’t work together in a physical office so we starting to work in the virtual office, which focus us in the communication channels (email, phone calls) and we learned to being effective in that; now we don’t have that need, but even so, I see that those kind of communication skills are so important even when you have you team mate working a couple o meters from you.

The first impression from my teammates to me, well I guess is… this guy need to raise a lot of money for the MC, is completely important and also mainly urgent… and also he has to raise more money for IPM which is also completely important and mainly urgent… so, why he took the challenge? Is he aware of that? Is he crazy? ...... Hahahaha, well is true! I’m a little bit crazy, but I also like challenges, but even more to achieve those challenges :)

My MCP (is still weird to said My MCP for me, hahaha), he started to call me the workaholic Peruvian guy, because he noticed I was working almost 12 hours per day in the office during this past two weeks, also my team mates started to send my mails and msn messages like… why are you still in the office???... Go to home! ... Go to rest! ... Go to watch TV! ... Stop working!!! Its 8pm!!!! … And perhaps you are the only guy who is in the office, right??? … Hahahaha, well those are the message I got during this last days, hahaha, my new team are really cool!

I just want to finish this part with a personal reflection, no matter from where you come from or in what part of the world you are, with AIESECers you will always feel like a family. :)

My first Month in Macedonia :) (1st part)

My first perspective…

Almost two months ago I made an important decision… I decide to apply for an international leadership position after my term as MCP, the country where I applied was The Republic of Macedonia.

Currently, on my first month living in Skopje, I want to share my first impression of the country, the MC, and me itself as AIESECer working as MC abroad.
Lest start with the cultural shock… is one the things I’m dealing all the time, ok, let’s see behind… I’m coming from a Latin culture, Spanish speaking; a guy who loves salsa, merengue, cumbia, and almost all rhythms in South and Central America, and now in Central Europe with people who loves electronic music… is funny! I fact last weekend I went a to open public concert of drums and bass… once I heard something about that, but now I experienced… hahaha, I really wanted to have my camera and capture everything I saw and send it to my friend in Peru, hehe, they surely would enjoy that.

The other thing is the Language, hehehe, Spanish Speaking guy, who also speaks a little bit of English, trying to communicate in a country where most people just speaks Macedonian and other little bit of English as well, hahhaha, the first week was nice, curious and sometimes poetic, hehehe, both cultures trying to communicate with words, physical expressions and draws…

The food… well, I have no complaints related to this very important and sometimes crucial point in my life, hehe, as any trainee, ceeder, or visitor in other country, the aiesecer wants to share the best restaurants, bars, fast foods and other food stores and corners around the city, which is just perfect, in matters of this point, I’m starting to love Macedonia… the food is similar than the Latin food in several aspects.

The night life, also, I had the chance to been in different welcome, goodbye and birthday parties and also concerts; meanwhile I used to go parties, drink with friends and dance almost all the time, the difference is the music, electronic instead of salsa, vodka instead of pisco, … but now, this is what I really love the most… the girls, :):):):):):) sometimes I thing I’m in the paradise, hahahaha, they are just beautiful… I’m in love again, but ok, I have to admit, the latin girls have something special that I really miss, but I’ll spend one year here, so I need to use to my new way of life :)

Do we change lives?

This was a question I always did to my self in the past.... there are moment when we seat and just start to think, did AIESEC change lives? I'm changin lives? there is a purpouse to being part of AIESEC???? well, this question I made were solved just two years later since I became member of AIESEC... but firs I will start from now....

At MC level... well... I still don't know how I change lives, in my team, in my friends, or other members in the organization, or maybe in the organization it self, in fact maybe I won't know the answer untill coming years.

At LC level... almost the same as the previous point, some members tells me that in my LCP period the LC was stronger than ever... best SSGN LC, a lot of partnership, good support from university and BoA, good work with ceeders, etc etc.... but if that means change lives? untill now the CEEDERS sends me mails telling my their history of succes and greetings for their time in my LC, thanks to the support from my members, and for the friendship they gain in their time in my LC.

At area level... is here where I know that I made a positive impact others life; last year I receive some mails from the SNs I realize... they wrote :"Thanks Yoel, thanks to you my life start to change" ....or... "I'm working abroad!!!!... i still can not believe it! thanks man"....or.... "I supouse to working in a small company in the city, thanks to you I'm working in a very good job"...or.... "I'm going to Peru to visit my family and pack my stuffs and for you, thank you so much for this opportunity you gave me"....or..... "I'll get married!!!! next year! you are invited as beast man!... thank you "Cholito" "..hehehehehehehehe.. those are message from some of my SNs that currently are working in a very good company in Peru, or working abroad in a multinational. Since that moment I say, "Thank AIESEC, I'm changing lives thank to the organization...."

At personal level... this is quit difficult to analize, I need my friends, family, and even more my team for this; they are the only one who saw me as regular university student to an aiesecer, if there is a change, they will see the difference... I'll ask them in the future.... personally point of view, I wan't to thanks AIESEC for this great opportunity... like manage a team with the best background and strong profiles in Peru, to have a holistic view of AIESEC in PERU, and even more, an holistic view of my life, what I want to became, what I want to do in my life.... that knowledge comes from AIESEC but even more from all the people I knew in the organization during my AIESEC career... my team, my friends, my critics, etc....

Thanks AIESEC PERU for change my life and allow me to make a positive impact within my friends, SNs, relatives.... my goal was, is.... and always will be ... being a "positive change agent in the society".

It's AIESEC.... It's up to you!

My first fall... becames a success

As Steve Jobs said, is all about "connecting the dots"... Three years ago, just four months after became part of AIESEC, I was making a traineeship in Banco de Credito in Lima, at the same time working as ceeder in CLPA, and also working with other LC members from CLUL and CLUC, thank to that experience I was very motivated, with a lot of ideas on my mind and wanted to take a leadership role; so I applied for LCVP OGX, I still was in Lima when I applied, but my LC won’t trust on me, maybe because few members really knows me, maybe because I was “too Newie” applying for the EB position, the fact is that I applied for VP OGX together with two great candidates, my VP OGX and other OGX key member… in the first round I lost. :(

How did I feel? Well, of course very sad!!! I was too disappointed with my LC, I was thinking… why…? now what…? My only chance was to wait until next year, I thought "I lost my chance to be LCP, and what can I do now?" (I knew that if I wanted to became LCP I needed to be VP before), you know... I really desired that leadership position, and I really desired to be the VP OGX, but that didn’t happen. To Quit wasn’t an option!!! So I decided to work hard as SN Manager with a new personal goal, to became the best matcher in LC Arequipa, then I started to MATCH every SN who comes to me, hehehe, it was nice, but later I didn’t knew that MATCH will became my inspirational history to stand for AIESEC. (I’ll tell this history in other blog post)

What about my personal goal? … Well by now I Realize 10 SNs and 1 TN from CLAQ and 2 SNs from CLUC, so it means 13 eXchanges in my AIESEC career by now. That is my record. I thing is the Record in AIESEC PERU, I’m not pretty sure, but I’m still happy becouse my personal goal was achieved. OGX Rulez! hehehe

Harder than… buy tickets in Egypt!!!!

We went by metro to bus and train main station in el Cairo, the first shock was that when people wants to get out/in from the train people don’t wait for you, they just trying to do both things at the same time, that’s why we miss our first stop, hopefully we could take a train back without problems.

In the Train Station, only ask for information is very difficult, as I mencionate before, few people speaks English, well… we trying to get a ticket to Aswan (there are 13 hours by train) and spend the night in the train, we try to get the train for 00:30… we wanted to go in second class (50 LE) so is ok, almost 10 USD, however the guy who sales the ticket just didn’t want to sell any ticket just becouse other guy say something about him, so we were waiting almos 2 hours!!! Is weird, noone complains, not even when the ticket’s guy was smoking, resting, drinking coffee, and chilling out with others!!!... We were piss off and we decided to take first class ticket or any ticket…. but no free space there. L

It was almost midnight and we meet a guy who was trying to sells us a Tour to Luxor for 5 days, it sound cool, it was almost all covered (even cheaper than the IPM Study Tour)… the problem was that we haven’t enough money at the moment, we were specting have a bagpacker trip, but in a tour is different, you need to be prepared and travel more confortable… at the end we decide to not take de tour (just a hunch), and went back to Piero’s apartment… but the metro was closed…. About the prize… not even close of the real prize!!! But that history is for other post…

Going back home! Is totally an ISSUE. After, today I learn a lot of tips! As few people speaks or have a basic level of English in Egypt, is always necessary to have any main information translated in Arabic, for example… THE ADRESS!!!! And the NUMBERS!!!! The cab driver didn’t speak English at all, so I write the spected cost in my hand… the driver took my pencil and write the prize…. When I saw how much was the travel…. I saw two weird icons, it was in ARABIC!!! But the driver was a smart guy, he took two billets and shows us, and we just say yes! Let’s get out from here!!!! (midnight, downtown, no English speaking country…)

The second thing was the Adress, the guy just lost! How difficul could be find a place calle El Maadi! …. We figure out, that place was four times bigger than San Juan de Lurigancho! Hahahahaha…. The funny thing is when the driver asked for direction to one guy in the street, the guy just only hop in and went with us, and thanks to him we finally get back home… so also write the address in native language…. Now we are in home, but we will travel the next day… hahahaha this adventure is amazing!!!!!! (Hope my parents were not reading this…. :P)

A HARD decision!!! ... Traveling in Egypt!!!

We had almost 5 days off after IPM, so we had to make an important decision, we have three main turistic places we need to go, but only 5 days is no enough to know all of them…. The three top destinations are…. Luxor and Aswan is called the world greatest open air museum… we have Karnak and Luxor, Nile River, Necropolis, Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, this destination takes 5 days!!! …. The second one is Alexandria, were we can find the ancient civilization of greats ships! Lend of Romans, Persians or Greeks on the amazing land of….. Alexander the Great! And the Pharos is one the Seven Wonders of the World!!!... The third option is go to Sinai… we are taking about the oldest and most famous natural monuments on earth (Biblically Speaking) the St. Catherine’s Monastery, was constructed in 527. It’s built around what is thought to be Moses’ Burning Bush, which has a chapel built atop it.

It was a hard decision to make, so…. And now starts the Victor & Yoel Adventures in Arabic Lands…..

MCPs road to Egypt!!!!

Two aiesecers, very excited!!! two country leaders!!! two peruvian representatives!!! who travel more than 20 hours!!!!.... crossing the Atlantic and The Mediterranean Sea!!!!... 4 Airports!!!!.... 3 Continents!!!!!.... arrived to the International Cairo Airport with a lot of emotion!!!! and...... we spend 1 hour in inmigration, and 2 hours waiting for someone to pick us up!!!! hahahahaha

First cultural shock!!! is frozen in el Cairo!!!!!! We will kill the guy who put in the delegates mailing "bring your summer clother, is sunny in Egypt" ..... 2nd cultural shock!!! there are no toilet paper in the toilets!!!!! only flush and left hand!!!! ahhhhhh hopefully we had a lot of toilet paper (thanks momm) !!!! 3rd cultural shock, the study tour covers 2 options, regular without security, and special with military security... i mean with bodyguards ..... weir!!!! 4th cultural shock.... almost noone speack english!!!! ahhhh is hard try to say something!!!!! 5th cultural shock!!!! you can not touch a girl, at least she is your girlfriend or even more, your wife!!!! buaaaaaaaaaa

Hahahaa, well is the first history of two Peruvians in Egypt!!! but we still have a lot to tell.....

My first Love in AIESEC…. OGX!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first taking responsibility in my @xp was to take charge of SN Recruitment Process, the experience who really involved me to AIESEC life and help me to decide to run for AIESEC.

In the past years in LC Arequipa, few students use to went to the informative sessions, and even less decided to run the SN recruitment process, in fact most of the past AIESEC members from LC Arequipa, are family related to other members or family friends, so AIESEC was becoming an association, but only from family and close friends, why? Well easy, a bad promotions campaign, or a not focused recruitment process.

How the student market looks open for this kind of opportunities(meaning X), I decide to run an open and bigger process, starting with a huge promotions campaign. Spam promotions to all virtual communities (each university, by faculty, etc), posters only in economic and management faculty and also information system faculty, media promotion in radio and newspapers, but the best idea where: call to each top student from the university offering this exchange and leadership opportunity, y remember the promotion quote “Leadership, Exchange, AIESEC and you!”, so, do you want to know what we get???... 480 students in the informative session, close to 300 students applying to AIESEC, and only for 10 positions… I just can say, it was the best recruitment experience of my life.

All the LC worked in the selection, interview, and review boards, etc. It was a great feeling inside the LC culture, each member excited to have new SNs in the LC, and each member excited to get involve in the OPS activities.

After a great recruitment process, with 6 very great MT profiles, and 4 TT profiles, we start the second part of the process, the matching and training process, and I had the luck to be SN Manager of 3 of them.

In the Christianism Formation class, or Introduction to Philosophy class, my teacher says, why you are in the world? What is your purpose of life? How you think you can be an impact in the society? …. So I didn’t think that this SN manager role helps me to understand better those questions.

I remember when I was first year student in the university, I meet a guy who I believed he was a leader, and I used to follow until once I hear from him “when you are young, you want to change the world, but after you get back to the reality and you only want to change your life”, after that I felt very disappointed, but then the AIESEC XP came to my life.

Being SN Manager was the most wonderful XP for me, I became a very close friend from each of my SNs, always knowing their attitudes, preferences, motivations, and even get to know their families, nice mothers and cool fathers, and sometimes beautiful sisters, hehehe (that's other history), etc, and also training them with basic AIESEC stuffs, etc. After one or two months they started to match and later realize; but the most wonderful gift I could get was, “Yoel, thanks for all, you made this possible, greetings from… Denmark, India, United Kingdom, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, USA…” students who saw a far away dream to work in other country, back home and get a good job position in a big company… I didn’t knew this point of view until a few months ago, when most of my SNs started to came back to PERU, or starting to moving abroad; the first call was for have a lunch, a couple of beers, and receive feedback and gratitude words from them, those words are the most wonderful gift you can get. You CHANGED their lives, and you are becoming a POSITIVE CHANGE AGENTE to the society.

I just can add, I have more friends, and also a bigger family with whom we can share a great gratitude from each other.

For me, the OGX life is one of the most wonderful experiences you can get from the AIESEC life.

OGX RULEZ!!!!!

OC Experience.... what a experience!!!!

There is something that we always say to one of my MC Team in any random discussion, “Is because you never were OC”, we all laugh for a while and then we continue with our job.

But, what means been part of an OC Team? what is the difference? Or why is that a difference? Well, to understand this we need to specify first what is the kind of OC are we talking about.

Starting from above, we have the OC from Small Activity like welcome party, or any other party, the barbeque OC, the legislation OC, the cultural presentation OC, the global village OC, the Team Building OC, and on and on; we can see that all those activities are important, but we are talking about a big changing experience, what means a strong leadership role from the OCP, that’s why is defined a leadership role when you work with you OC for at least 3 months, you have plan and budget, and also the evaluation from your directors.

The real OC experience, now this is different, activities like National Conference OC, the National PboX OC (now this role is changing not as OC, but yes as a real leadership position, this issue will be discussed in other blog file), or any National activity.

The top OC Experience, well I just can only saw from outside, we are talking about OC from Regional LDS or XPRO, about IC, ITC, or IPM, (any ILM) those OC or CC (congress committee) experience, for sure are very demanding for any AIESEC member.

What do you learn? Working with a lot of stress, coordination, really really team work, yeees in my opinion, in the OC is when you really improve your TEAM MANAGEMENT skills, financial skills, you need to be ready for make very fast decisions. In my recommendation, if you really want to be an LC EB member (very recommended for LCP), this is a very very good learning experience.

Mmm something for add, I hear a lot of histories about past OCs, histories that you can’t imagine, and when you hear it, you get shocked, for example….

When 4 days before the conference the hotel manager calls you and say: “We had a big problem with the government, we can’t host any event in the coming month”, but you know, there are 100 delegates coming, we have external, half of the delegation is already traveling to the conference, so do you cancel the conference? Do look for other hotel?... mmmm

What happened if you check your financial statement and your number are in red, you need to pay to the hotel, all the delegates are already in the hotel, but you can not afford it… You look for other hotel? (remember the delegates are already here) what kind of hotel? (you don’t have enough money), tomorrow the conference should start (it means there are more delegates coming tomorrow), people needs to eat, because it covers the conference fee (but you don’t have enough money)…… mmmmm

Is the closing plenary, all delegates are in the conference room ready to go back home, but you didn’t pay the rest of the money to the hotel(you don’t have the money) and the manager orders to close the doors and don’t let anyone to leave, like is the last day, a lot of delegates will travel to their countries the same day… and the manager won’t negotiate with you, he only wants the money.

Finally, I can say that no matter what happened during your OC term, remember first what you lived, the emotions, stress, management, learning, skills, and more stress, hehhehehe. All those are learning points for all your life.

Añorando ser Newie otra vez

Uno de los más gratos recuerdos que un aieseco puede tener, es la época en que es un Newie, un member y en casos un VP; siempre recuerdo las conversaciones con uno de nuestros alumni de la decada de los 80, contando sus travesuras cuando eran aiesecers, y me ponia a pensar, "seguro comentaré nuestras travesuras aiesecas dentro de algunas décadas en reencuentro de alumni"; lo gracioso que ese sentimiento se puede percibir ahora mismo.

Una de mis ultimas conversaciones con amigos de mi promocion aieseca, era: "recuerdas el congreso que nos conocimos???", "ese SDL fué el mejor congreso que he tenido en mi vida", "y la fieeeeesta!!! jajaja, queee fiesta", y asi muchas muchas muchas cosas que recordar, sin embargo toodas esas conversaciones siempre suelen terminar en una frase: "Esas épocas, cuando éramos newies..." o "Me gustaría ser newie otra vez y hacer chongo con los demás...".

Todo ello es también aprendizaje, cuando eres newie, tienes muchas libertades, estas experimentando aiesec, y tienes menos responsabilidades, es una época de oro, porque haces grandes amigos, aprendes bastante, tienes las mejores juergas que puedas recordar (o no recordar), y las mejores anécdotas que contar.... Sin embargo llega el momento en que asumes un puesto de liderazgo fuerte, ya sea OCP de un PBoX, LCEB, o MC.... ahi cambian las cosas, por que desde que asumes el cargo, asumes un monton de responsabilidades, y por sobre todo que te conviertes en un ejemplo que seguir.

El Ejemplo a seguir es todo un Issue, esto te priva de super juergas, no puedes salir muy seguido por que tienes que trabajar en casa, y en todas partes, todos escuchan lo que dices por que sea cual fuere lo que digas, esa será la palabra de tu EB, OC, MC.... y si dices o haces algo, es 99% probable que al dia siguiente se ha creado un rumor que se ha expandido, con algunas variaciones, y multiplicado de tamáño por 10.

Una cosa curiosa que siempre he observado, especialmente en cuanto a juergas, jajaja, (es que solia vivir de juergas cuando estaba en el cole y parte de la universidad), es que cuando era newie, siempre tenia algo que contar del fin de semana, por que siempre habia alguna juerga a donde ir; cuando llegué a ser VP OGX las salidas disminuyeron, ya no con los amigos de la universidad, ahora la mayoría era con aiesecos, pero aun asi habia juergas y siempre habia poca presion laboral; la cosa se puso brava cuando llegué a ser LCP ya que las fiestas se limitaron solo para aiesec, asistía a la gran mayoria de juergas, sin embargo usualmente me sentía agotado, ya que universidad + tesis + trabajo + aiesec te deja poco tiempo, y además, menos gente me hablaba en las fiestas, a excepción de mi EB y los miembros antiguos; ahora como MCP similar, circulos de amigos es solo aiesec, porque no conosco más gente fuera de aiesec en esta ciudad, el trabajo es mayor, la presión por los resultados también, las fiestas ni que decir ya que tratas de disfrutar, pero siempre llega el trabajo en la mente y da ganas de regresar a casa y resolverlo, ahhhh y las conversas siempre son con alumni, mc, miembros antiguos etc, y la tematica solo aiesec. Ahora también en los congresos internacionales, observo a AIESEC International, todos conversando solo con su equipo, y siempre con cara de cansados, al PAI casi ni lo ves, porque viene, saluda, conversa un par de veces, un baile y regresa a trabajar; o simplemente están parados a un costado de la pista de baile, con un vaso de licor en la mano, y mirando a todos divertirse y con la mente "Añorando ser Newie otra vez".

Añado un pequeño mensaje de alguien que en tan poco tiempo que lo conocí, se volvió un amigo de por vida.... y creo que de eso también se trata AIESEC.... puedes no haber visto a alguien en toooda tu vida, pero el día que lo conoces, te vuelves gran amigo de el, hablan de los mismos intereses, mismas dudas y similares motivaciones.

¿Qué gano siendo parte de AIESEC?

Si eres de AIESEC, seguro escuchaste de tus padres... ¿Porqué no buscas una práctica? Desde que entraste lo unico que veo es que paras en reuniones y siempre llegas a casa tarde.... y de seguro trataste de explicárselos pero sin mucho éxito... a mi punto de vista, es más facil vender una TN a un Gerente que explicarles AIESEC a nuestros padres, bueno, ese es otro issue.`

¿A donde quiero llegar? Pues que no hay mejor explicación que la práctica, si queremos explicar lo que aprendemos de AIESEC entonces es simple, cuenta lo que hiciste en los últimos meses... para muestra un botón... en estos 6 meses he liderado un equipo de 6 personas, las más capacitadas de AIESEC y todos de las mejores universidades del Perú; viajé a Holanda representando a Perú junto con los presidentes de cada país en donde AIESEC tiene sede; conocí y me reuní con la Princesa de Holanda donde dialogamos sobre el desarrollo de Latino América y el Rol de Europa; viajé a Colombia donde conocí al Presidente de la Nacion Colombia, Alvaro Uribe, quien nos dió un interesante discurso y además nos tomamos unas fotos luego de conversar un rato con el sobre el futuro de Latino America; también estuve en Polonia donde conocí los campos de concentración Nazi, y pude entender exactamente el porqué se creó la Asociación a la que pertenezco; he tenido más de 10 entrevista con diferentes Miembros de Directorios, Gerentes Generales, Sub Gerentes, Vice Presidentes con los cuales hicimos negocios y entablamos alianzas estratégicas; recibí ofertas de trabajo en diferentes países del mundo en empresas como HP, Microsoft, PwC, Deloitte, IBM, Cadburry, ABN, DHL, donde puedo escoger empezar apenas termine mi carrera en AIESEC.... por lo demás creo en resumen es lo más resaltante....

Asi transcurre la vida de un AIESECo común, relaciones internacionales, relaciones publicas, ventas, negociaciones, liderazgo, manejo de equipo, trabajo bajo stress, resolución de conflictos, en resumen es un aprendizaje continuo a corta edad, y la gran mayoria de nosotros aún no hemos llegado ni siquiera a los 25 años.

Entonces, si ponemos a dudas, esto es lo que aprendemos en AIESEC, somos estudiantes universitarios que ponemos la teoria universitaria a la practica profesional, y apredemos a ser buenos directores ejecutivos, Talento que las empresas buscan, o Talento que nosotros desarrollamos para ser los dueños de nuestra propia empresa.

Es bien dificil creer esto, yo fui uno de ellos, que miraba de afuera lo que AIESEC ofrecía, pues ahora me encuentro en el otro lado, viviendo la experiencia dia a día. Solo pido a todos, no pierdan esta oportunidad y que es una experiencia que muchos también merecen tener.

¿Un exquisito ejemplo de defensa a la soberanía nacional?

Durante un debate en una universidad de Estados Unidos, le preguntaron al ex gobernador del Distrito Federal, hoy Ministro de Educación, CRISTOVÃO "CHICO" BUARQUE, qué pensaba sobre la internacionalización de la Amazonia.

El joven estadounidense introdujo su pregunta, diciendo que esperaba la respuesta "de un humanista y no de un brasileño" (trampa).

Ésta fue la respuesta del Sr. Cristovão Buarque:

"Realmente, como brasileño, sólo hablaría en contra de la internacionalización de la Amazonia. Por más que nuestros gobiernos no cuiden debidamente ese patrimonio, él es nuestro.

Como humanista, sintiendo riesgo de la degradación ambiental que sufre la Amazonia, puedo imaginar su internacionalización, como también de todo lo demás, que es de suma importancia para la humanidad.

Si la Amazonia, desde una ética humanista, debe ser internacionalizada?, internacionalicemos también las reservas de petróleo del mundo entero. El petróleo es tan importante para el bien de la humanidad como la Amazonia para nuestro futuro. Pese a eso, los dueños de las Reservas creen tener el derecho de aumentar o disminuir la extracción de petróleo, subir su precio.

De igual forma, el capital financiero de los países ricos debería ser internacionalizado. Si Amazonia es una reserva para todos los seres humanos, no se debería quemar solamente por la voluntad de un dueño o un país. Quemar la Amazonia es tan grave como el enorme desempleo provocado por las decisiones arbitrarias de los especuladores globales. Por lo tanto No podemos permitir que las reservas financieras sirvan para quemar países enteros, con la voluptuosidad de la especulación.

También, y antes que la Amazonia, me gustaría ver la internacionalización de los grandes museos del mundo. El Louvre no debe pertenecer solo a Francia. Cada museo del mundo es el guardián de las piezas más bellas producidas del
genio humano. No se puede dejar que ese patrimonio cultural, tanto como es el patrimonio natural amazónico... sea manipulado y destruido por el sólo placer de un propietario o de un país. Hace poco tiempo, un millonario japonés decidió enterrar, junto con él, un cuadro de un gran maestro. Muy por el contrario, ese cuadro tendría que haber sido internacionalizado.

Durante este encuentro, las Naciones Unidas están realizando el Foro Del Milenio, pero... algunos presidentes de países tuvieron dificultades para participar, debido a situaciones desagradables surgidas en la frontera de los EE.UU. Por eso, creo que N. York, como sede de las Naciones Unidas, debe ser internacionalizada.

Por lo menos Manhatan debería pertenecer a toda la humanidad. De la misma forma que París, Venecia, Roma, Londres, Río de Janeiro, Brasilia... cada ciudad, con su belleza especial e historia del mundo debe pertenecer al mundo entero. Si EEUU quiere internacionalizar la Amazonia, para no correr el riesgo de dejarla en manos de los brasileños,
internacionalicemos todos los arsenales nucleares norteamericanos. Bastará pensar que ellos ya demostraron que 'son capaces' de usar esas armas, pues YA LO HICIERON, con destrucción miles de veces mayor que las lamentables quemas realizadas en los bosques de Brasil....

En sus discursos, los actuales candidatos a la presidencia de los Estados Unidos han defendido la idea de internacionalizar las reservas forestales del mundo,... a cambio de la deuda. Comencemos usando esa deuda, para
garantizar que cada niño del mundo tenga la posibilidad de comer, y de ir a la escuela.

Internacionalicemos a los niños, tratándolos a todos ellos, sin importar el país donde nacieron, como patrimonio que merecen los cuidados del mundo entero. Con tanto más cuidado del que se merece la Amazonia. Cuando los
dirigentes traten a los niños pobres del mundo como "Patrimonio de la Humanidad", no permitirán que trabajen, cuando deberían estudiar; tampoco permitirán que mueran, cuando deberían vivir.

Por eso, como humanista, acepto defender la internacionalización del mundo; pero,... mientras el mundo me trate como brasileño, lucharé para que la Amazonia sea nuestra. ¡Solamente nuestra! "

Cultural Shock

¿Alguna vez te has puesto a pensar como se siente un extranjero en tu ciudad? ¿Recuerdas como te sentías cuando saliste de intercambio en el colegio o universidad?

A mi me ha pasado, y me está pasando, pero lo quiero poner identificandolo por ETAPAS que veo se repiten en este tema;

1. La Luna de Miel: Se refleja una gran emoción y felicidad de la persona cuando está en nuevo ambiente, y no es para mal, el hecho de tener libertad, todos se interesan en ti en las primeras semanas, y ves un ambiente de oportunidades en la nueva ciudad; pero luego se complica la situación.... Pese a haber vivido en Buenos Aires dos años antes, recuerdo estar maravillado por estar en Lima, el hecho de estar en la ciudad que tiene el mayor porcentaje de la economia nacional, las tantas ideas que tenia en mente, y los ánimos por el cielo de poder cambiar la realidad de la asociación hicieron esta primera etapa muy interesante.

2. La Transición: Mala comunicación, dificultades de entendimiento de tu cultura, te puedes sentir impaciente, descontento, a veces rabia, tristeza; todo esto pasa porque ya empezaste a enfrentar esta nueva cultura, se puede decir de forma simple como "Estas pisando tierra", es hora de afrontar la realidad; cabe resaltar que esta etapa toma tiempo, es el momento en que descubres quienes son tus nuevos y verdaderos amigos, y quienes realmente se interesan en ti o tienen empatía.... Yo ya tenia un pleno conocimiento de mi entorno, la gente, la realidad, y me sentía frustrado por que persivia que en mi entorno habian individuos que al haber vivido en una ciudad que lo tiene todo, no asumían retos y riesgos que yo si estaba dispuesto a asumir; recuerdo también que de haber sido una de las personas más expresivas me había convertido en alguien bien cerrado con mis vivencias, y también me sentía muy triste de no contar con mis amigos que tenía en Arequipa, y que no encontraba amigos en esta nueva ciudad, verdaderos amigos.

3. El Balance: Ahora ya empezaste a conocer la cultura, le encuentras de nuevo el gusto a la vida, pero lo más interesante de aqui es que empiezas a evaluar las diferencias entre tu cultura y la nueva, y agregas valor a tu riqueza y orgullo de tu cultura natal.... Aún no puedo expresas realidades más claras en cuanto a mi rol actual y este estado, pero si puedo decir que me encuentro entre la etapa anterior y esta; sin embargo en el pasado cuando estuve en Argentina, sentía el orgullo desmesurado de mi raza y de mis tradiciones, tanto como de mi ciudad y de mi país; me volví demasiado crítico de las cosas y de lo que podría aprovechar en esta nueva vida.

4. El Hijo Adoptivo: Llega el momento de la adaptación final, cuando te vuelves un ciudadano más de este ya no tan nuevo entorno, eres el hijo adoptivo de la ciudad, ves claramente lo bueno y lo malo, defines bien tus metas, y te enfocas en tus actividades para el cumplimiento de tus objetivos.

5. El Retorno: Cuando cumpliste con tus objetivos y regresas a tu ciudad natal, pero sin embargo ya cambiaron las cosas, cambiaron poco pero cambiaron, sin embargo el quién más cambió fuiste tu, y volver a adaptarse es aun más complicado, ya que eres un desconocido a tu circulo de amigos que dejaste y tu entorno social en el que creciste.

Cada una de estas etapas dependen mucho de la personalidad, cada una tiene diferentes tiempos de duración, por ello es un tema subjetivo, sin embargo y es muy importante recalcar que hay momentos muy dificiles, es ahi que los amigos deben de dar la mano.

Pero entonces ¿Cómo enfrentar el Choque Cultural?
Deseo compartir una seria de recomendaciones para asimilar con mayor facilidad este proceso en nuestras vidas y de la mano de las actividades que hago en la actualidad...

Tener un Hobbye: Todos los dias voy al Gimnasio y participo de actividades competitivas tales como maratones o triatlons, ademas que ayuda bastante al control del stress.
No olvidar las cosas positivas que TU tienes: Creo que la gran ayuda vino por parte de mi equipo, tener los Team Building ayudan mucho para ver lo bueno de cada uno, y también lo que hay que mejorar.
Ser paciente: Este proceso toma tiempo, por eso la paciencia es importante, recuerda que Roma no se hizo en un día.
Se constructivo contigo mismo: No seas duro y critico si la cosas o el entorno no son como tu lo esperas, el adaptarse es parte un aprendizaje mucho más superior que cualquier curso gerencial.
Ponte metas: Corto y largo plazo, te ayudará a saber de que realmente estas inviritiendo y aprovechando tu tiempo en esta nueva ciudad, todo tipo de metas valen, asi que no la pienses tanto, simplemente pontelas, no te sirve de nada correr si no sabes a donde llegar.
Permítete sentirte triste: Es muy dificil dejar tus comodidades, tus amigos, tu familia, tu vida social, es completamente humano hacerlo.
No te cierres mucho: Se abierto con tu sentimiento con los demas, especialmente con tus nuevos amigos, ellos te ayudarán a sobrepasar esos momento difíciles que siempre ocurren; particularmente fué un error mio cerrarme mucho por el temor de que vean debilidad en mi, pero resulta que las cosas son diferentes.
Busca a los tuyos: Es casi seguro que existe alguien de tu misma ciudad o cultura en esta nueva ciudad, buscalo y comparte con el, por el estará buscando lo mismo.

Finalmente un comentario final, este proceso del Choque Cultura (Cultural Shock) es muy normal y siempre ocurre, lo importante es saber usarlo como un punto de aprendizaje clave para tu futuro profesional y familiar, es una gran experiencia que marcará tu vida como un triunfador o un mediocre.

Conferencia Nacional de AIESEC

Un gran reto, ser LCP

Son 16 días al cargo, y ya se sienten las responsabilidades y el peso de un LC en mis hombros, y creo tambíen sobre los hombros de mi junta directiva.

Ayer tubimos nuestro Take Over day y Team Building con la EB saliente y la electa, un día muy agotador con mucha información que asimilar y con bastante responsabilidad por parte de la nueva EB.

Nos sirvio bastante, ahora sabemos a lo que nos hemos metido, y todos tenemos la convicción de lograr las metas trazadas, en forma particular me dí cuenta que tengo un super equipo, creo que no hubiese podido escoger mejores personas para tomar esos cargos, nos dimos cuenta que no somos un grupo de amigos que tenemos la responsabilidad de guiar a nuestro LC, sino que nos dimos cuenta que por sobre todo somo un EQUIPO, y que nuestra responsabilidad que tenemos con nuestro LC y en general con AIESEC, se un hobby para nosotros. Qué mejor que hacer un trabajo y disfrutar haciendolo y hacerlo con tus amigos.

Hoy me siento orgulloso de tener el equipo que tengo, y más orgulloso de tener mentors con un capital humano sorprendente de quienes tengo mucho que aprender y bastante por agradacer.

Este reto recien empieza, y mi deseo es que dentro de un año cuando mi perido culmine, estar de nuevo reunidos en un día similar enseñando a la nueva junta directiva, mostrando los resultados obtenidos según las metas trazadas, pero por sobretodo haber superado con creces las espectativas que los demás miembros hayan tenido sobre nosotros, y tambien haber superado mis propias espectativas, si logro cumplir todo eso, me habré dado cuenta que hice un trabajo bueno como LCP, y que habré ganado también muy buenos amigos, mi junta directiva.
